Learn quick tricks for calculating percentages in your head: the 10% method, commutativity, tipping, and everyday financial calculations.
Why is it worth learning to calculate percentages in your head?
Percentages are everywhere: in store discounts, in bank interest rates, in restaurant tips, in news statistics, in election results, and in a thousand other everyday situations. Mastering mental calculation of percentages gives you a real advantage: you make decisions faster, detect errors in invoices or receipts, and you don't always depend on the phone to do basic calculations.
To check your mental calculations or solve more complex percentages, you always have the Percentage Calculator by GlobalTool. But we are going to teach you how to do without it in most situations.
The 10% trick: the basis of everything
The calculation of any percentage begins with knowing how to find 10% instantly. And it's trivial: just move the decimal point one place to the left.
- 10% of €80 = €8
- 10% of €235 = €23.50
- 10% of €1,500 = €150
Starting from 10%, you can derive any other percentage by combining simple operations:
| Percentage | How to calculate it | Example with €80 |
|---|---|---|
| 5% | Half of 10% | 8 ÷ 2 = €4 |
| 15% | 10% + 5% | 8 + 4 = €12 |
| 20% | 10% × 2 | 8 × 2 = €16 |
| 25% | Divide by 4 | 80 ÷ 4 = €20 |
| 30% | 10% × 3 | 8 × 3 = €24 |
| 50% | Divide by 2 | 80 ÷ 2 = €40 |
| 75% | 50% + 25% | 40 + 20 = €60 |
| 1% | Move the comma two places | €0.80 |
The commutativity trick: swap the numbers
This is one of the most elegant and little-known tricks. The percentage is commutative, meaning that 8% of 50 is the same as 50% of 8. Always.
Golden trick
If they ask you 7% of 200, turn it around: 200% of 7 = 14. Much easier. You can always swap the percentage and the number to simplify the calculation.
This trick is especially useful when one of the two numbers is "friendly" (like 10, 25, 50 or 100). Practicing it will make you a remarkably fast mental calculator.
Calculate tip in seconds
Calculating tip is one of the most common applications of calculating percentages. This is how you do it mentally:
- 10% tip: move the comma. Bill €47.80 → tip €4.78 (round up to €5).
- 15% tip: calculate 10% and add half. 4.78 + 2.39 ≈ €7.
- 20% tip: doubles 10%. 4.78 × 2 ≈ €10.

Useful percentages in personal finances
Percentages are the basis of financial language. Some calculations you should be able to do in your head:
- Savings rate: If you earn €2,000 per month and save €400, your savings rate is 400/2,000 = 20%. If you want to improve that number, check out our guide on financial planning.
- Debt ratio: Your total monthly debt payment should not exceed 30-35% of your net income.
- Investment performance: If an investment of €5,000 generates €350 per year, the return is 350/5,000 = 7%. For more detail, read about compound interest.
- VAT: Calculating the 21% VAT in your head is easy: 20% + 1%. For a €50 product: 10 + 0.50 = €10.50 VAT, total €60.50.
With practice, these calculations become automatic. For more complex proportions that require exact calculation, you can always use the Rule of Three or the Discount Calculator by GlobalTool.
